Year 4

As a school, we have developed a flexible approach to our curriculum, where we use blocking for some subjects and individual or discrete for others. Waverley Abbey's 'flex' curriculum is an approach which enables children to become fully immersed with their learning.

2027 Multiplication Times Table Checks will take place in the first week of June for Y4 children (7th - 11th June 2027) - further information will be shared with parents closer to the time.

Welcome to Year 4 at Waverley Abbey! 
At Waverley Abbey, we believe in nurturing curiosity, creativity, and confidence through a rich and balanced curriculum. Year 4 is a time of exciting exploration, hands-on learning, and personal growth. 

 
English
Over the year, pupils will be exposed to a range of high quality texts such as 'The Highland Falcon Thief' and 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane'. They will produce writing for a range of purposes including: setting descriptions of imaginary worlds, explanations of how volcanoes are formed; informative texts about the Anglo-Saxons; creative stories inspired by Beowulf; recounts linked to the book 'Escape from Pompeii'.
 

Music
Each term a different class learns the clarinet. They are taught by Surrey Arts teacher Mrs Wilson in groups of 16. At the end of the term, there is a showcase of the classes progress for parents and carers.

Science
A highlight of Y4 science learning is a visit from Genie Lab to support our Sates of Matter unit of learning. Other topics covered include: sound; living things and their habitats; the digestive system; electricity.

Design & Technology
Children will create moving toys using a cam mechanism, combining creativity with engineering.  In the Summer Term, children will develop their sewing skills by creating their very own lunch bag. They will also use their electricity knowledge from science to design and make their own electric campervan. 

 
Art
Y4 art will look at self-portraits, explore perspective and scale through photography and explore different methods of print making.

Geography
In geography children will study the counties and regions of the UK; apply orienteering skills in outdoor activities, explore earthquakes and volcanoes and investigate the geography of our local area: Farnham.
 
Computing
In addition to ongoing online safety education, pupils will gain hands-on experience with Scratch and develop their coding and programming skills
 
French
Madame Hunt continues to teach the children French though exploring traditional foods and snacks; engaging in role-play to simulate shopping experiences; enhancing conversational skills
 
PE & Sport
PE - Swimming; Dance; Orienteering and Gymnastics
Games - rugby, football, hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, rounders.

RE
Children explore Christianity, focusing on: God’s promise; The concept of His kingdom and begin to learn about Sikhism
 
Year 4 is a year of imagination, exploration, and achievement. We are proud of the enthusiasm and creativity our pupils bring to every lesson and look forward to celebrating their continued growth!
