PSHE

All things are possible for one who believes – Mark 9:23

At Waverley Abbey we aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills that they need to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.
They are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of the school. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the cultural, spiritual, moral and social issues that are part of growing up. Pupils are helped to achieve this through weekly discrete lessons, participating in workshops run by outside agencies and discussions.

The PSHE curriculum evolves constantly to be responsive to the needs of today’s pupils. We want our pupils to be prepared for the challenges they will face in life. Through learning about health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world, children are given opportunities to develop their skills in a safe environment enabling them to grow into confident, caring and respectful members of our community.

At Waverley Abbey, we follow the programme Jigsaw which covers all aspects of Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education in an age-appropriate way. Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase, as the table below shows:

Being Me in My World

Includes understanding their place in the class, school and global community

Celebrating Difference

Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work

Dreams and Goals

Includes goal-setting, aspirations, working together to design and organise fund-raising events

Healthy Me

Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices

Relationships

Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills

Changing Me

Includes Sex and Relationship Education in the context of looking at change

Curriculum Intent:

At Waverley Abbey the intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all, and that will maximise the outcomes for every child, so that they know more, remember more and understand more. PSHE is embedded in all that we do to enable our children to become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society.

Our PSHE curriculum has been built with the aim to support the development of the ‘whole child’, by helping them to understand how they are developing personally and socially as well as promoting their social, mental and physical development. Children will be able to develop the ability to tackle the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Through our discreet lessons, children are taught how to keep themselves safe, physically and emotionally resulting in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, which enables children to access the wider curriculum. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.

Curriculum Implementation:

We strive to provide our children with learning opportunities across and beyond the curriculum, in specific lessons, special school projects and other activities that enrich pupils’ experiences. All teachers follow a scheme of Jigsaw which cover these specific areas; Being Me, Celebrating Differences, Dreams and Goals, Health Me, Relationships and Changing Me (RSHE). However, there are always occasions where teachers may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue arisen in their own class. Our classroom environments reinforce the PSHE curriculum through questioning, vocabulary and discussion topics. PSHE is an important part of school assemblies were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

Curriculum Impact:

By the end of the key stage, through their PSHE learning, pupils are equipped with the skills and knowledge to allow them to make informed choices about how to live their lives. Through the Jigsaw curriculum and specific areas covered (Being Me, Celebrating Differences, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me) pupils can approach a range of real-life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life. Our PSHE curriculum supports our pupils to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society, who appreciate difference and diversity. They can recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Individual Liberty. Pupils can understand and manage their emotions and look after their mental health and well-being. They develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future. They also understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age-appropriate level.
